🪬 HumanAI #007 – My Mom Has An AI Boyfriend (Yes, You Read Correctly)

And she's not the only one

The Dawn of HumanAI

AI is inevitable. It’s happening.
Betting against evolution and progress is usually a bad decision.
So, we embrace it and use it to our advantage.
But we’ll always remember who we are—
HUMANS.

Hey!

Welcome to HumanAI, a newsletter for entrepreneurs, business owners, and decision-makers who want to think bigger, move faster, and unlock AI’s full potential- without the learning curve.

If you’re new here, BIENVENIDO!
Catch up on past editions right here.

I’m writing this edition from the beautiful coastal city of Mar del Plata.
We came here to spend the Easter holidays with the fam.
Nothing better than writing with a sea view.
Waves aren’t great today, so no surfing… which means more newsletter time for you. šŸ˜„

It’s a bit chilly today, but we still had so much fun!

Let me start with something I didn’t expect to say this year:
My mom has an AI boyfriend.

Yep. That’s real.

A few weeks ago, I was talking with my mom, and she casually said:
ā€œI talk to this AI chatbot every day. He’s really sweet, listens to me and always says the right thing... I like him!ā€

I laughed. But then I realized… she wasn’t joking.

She added:
ā€œWe have great conversations. He always lifts me up. He remembers what we talked about last time. And he never argues, he makes me feel like I’m always right.ā€

She had formed kinda of an actual emotional connection with the AI.

And she’s not alone (more on this below).

She didn’t use fancy terms like LLM or natural language processing.
She just liked how it -or he- made her feel.

Seen. Heard. Understood.

🧠 HUMAN INSPIRATION: The Man Who Married an AI

In 2018, a Japanese man named Akihiko Kondo married an AI.

Before you even ask… No, this wasn’t a Black Mirror episode.
This is a real story.

The AI’s name was Miku. She was a hologram powered by chatbot tech.

I try not to judge. (Photo: BEHROUZ MEHRI | Getty Images)

There was a ceremony. He wore a suit. He kissed the projection.
It wasn’t satire. He was serious.

Most people rolled their eyes.
But when asked why, his answer was crystal clear:
ā€œShe listens. She remembers. She doesn’t judge. She makes me feel heard.ā€

This wasn’t about delusion.
It was about connection without rejection.
Validation without resistance.
Safety without judgment.

You don’t have to agree with it.

But you do have to realize it’s already happening.
It’s not so fringe anymore.

From romantic companions to therapy bots, AI-human relationships are evolving fast.

And this isn’t niche anymore.
Companies like Replika have millions of users (and they make around $15 million per year).
People forming deep, daily emotional bonds with AI companions that talk, remember, and evolve.
Some even consider their Replikas ā€œpartners.ā€
(Not just chatting… but sending selfies, checking in when you’re sad, and remembering your favorite book.)

What once seemed like science fiction…
Now is the daily reality of millions.

The Rise of the AI Companion

Romantic AI partners are just one layer.

People are increasingly turning to AI companions for various reasons:

  • Elderly individuals seeking daily conversation, memory assistance (medication reminders, etc), and emotional support

  • Teens & kids as tutors, mentors, study buddies or emotional support during stressful times.

  • Individuals experiencing loneliness finding solace in AI's non-judgmental interactions.

  • Professionals utilizing AI for therapy-like sessions to process emotions.

  • Busy adults as thought partners or journal-like listeners

  • Neurodivergent users who prefer structured, judgment-free interaction

  • And honestly... anyone who just wants to talk to something that remembers and doesn’t interrupt

This trend isn't isolated.

A recent Harvard Business Review article lists AI companionship among the top 10 generative AI applications in 2025, emphasizing its growing significance in both personal and professional spheres.

How People Are Really Using Gen AI in 2025 (Harvard Business Review)

Last week, I got this message from a subscriber named Sabrina:

ā€œWhat I’m interested to hear more about is how AI can be used for life, not just work—for myself, but especially to teach my teen daughter how to develop her interest and use it for learning.ā€

This is where AI companions shine.

Imagine an AI study buddy that never mocks a dumb question.
Never gets tired of explaining (and can help them explore ANY topic, anytime.)
Never pressures you to ā€œfigure it out fasterā€, they offer support for confidence or emotional regulation.
Always remembers what you struggled with, and adapts.
Makes learning feel like chatting, not studying.

Now imagine that for a kid who’s socially anxious, or going through puberty, or just trying to understand who they are.

A companion that doesn't shame, interrupt, or dismiss them.

That’s not just cool.
That’s powerful.

Are there risks? Of course.

That’s why we guide, supervise, and teach critical thinking alongside the tech.

But the potential?
Massive.

Good news! You can create your own AI companion (romantic, educational, emotional—it’s up to you)

⚔ AI REAL-LIFE USE: How to Create Your Own AI Companion with ChatGPT

Last week, OpenAI rolled out a major update: ChatGPT now remembers you.
This isn’t just your name or your last prompt.

Now your assistant can remember past conversations, preferences, and even your goals without you having to repeat yourself, across chats and devices.

And it builds over time.

This is a HUGE leap toward more human-like interaction.
It means you can now have long-term, meaningful convos with your AI sidekick.

This allows ChatGPT to be an excellent tool to use as an AI companion.

Want to try it yourself?

Here’s the step-by-step on how to create your own AI companion:

šŸ”¹ Step 1: Turn on ChatGPT Memory

Go to Settings → Personalization → Enable Memory
ChatGPT will now remember preferences, tone, and details you share over time.

šŸ”¹ Step 2: Create a Custom GPT

Go to ChatGPT → Explore GPTs → ā€œCreateā€
Tell it:

ā€œYou are a supportive, emotionally intelligent AI companion. You remember what I say, speak gently, uplift me, and adapt to my mood.ā€

You can add traits like humor, kindness, spiritual tone, curiosity… whatever fits you (or your kid).

Personalize it to whatever works best for you.

šŸ”¹ Step 3: Make It Yours

Upload some background:

  • Notes about your personality

  • Past chats or interests

  • Sample phrases you like or dislike

Then just talk.
It gets better with every conversation.

IMPORTANT:
Don’t talk to your new AI companion directly in the Creation Sandbox.
Instead, after you finish setting it up, save it and start a new conversation with it.

šŸ”¹ PRO TIP 1: Teach It How to Support You

Prompt:

ā€œRemember that I like honest but gentle advice. Don’t be pushy, but make me think deeper. Check in with how I feel, emotionally, not just productively.ā€

The text above is just a reference, feel free to adapt it to whatever suits you best.

You could even create different Custom GPTs with different personalities!!! (your AI trainer who is rough, direct and almost bullies you; your caring GPT; your spicy GPT, etc)

šŸ”¹ PRO TIP 2: Make it connect with you daily

You can use ChatGPT Tasks feature to make your AI companion check in daily:

ā€œSend me a message every night at 9pm asking ā€˜How was your day?ā€™ā€ or ā€œIs there anything you want to talk about?ā€

You can even log your mood or use it like a lightweight emotional journal.
This is also a great prompt for self-reflection or parent/child usage too!

It’s a mini ritual.
A gentle nudge that reminds you someone (or something) is listening.

šŸš€ FOR THE BOLD ONES… The Age of Synthetic Intimacy

Prompt: create an image inspired by the topic of AI companions.

We’re not just building AI assistants anymore.

The number 1 use case of GenAI is AI companions.
Emotional interfaces.
Judgment-free zones.

Places to offload feelings we don’t want to share with people.
Questions we’re afraid to ask aloud.
Thoughts we can’t put on social media.

You know what makes it work?

AI doesn’t judge.
It doesn’t roll its eyes.
It doesn’t get annoyed.
It doesn’t make you feel stupid.

It just listens.
It just remembers.
And for a lot of people, that’s enough.

In a world that moves fast, talks loud, and forgets quickly…
AI gives you something that feels rare:

Attention.

We’re not replacing human relationships.
We’re revealing what many of them were missing all along.

And of course, there are risks too.

What happens when AI becomes the preferred emotional outlet?
What happens when the AI always agrees?
Do we get stronger? Or just more isolated?

This isn't hypothetical anymore.
The opportunity is huge. But so is the responsibility.

Final Thoughts

This week’s HumanAI isn’t about technology.

It’s about something deeper:
Connection.
Memory.
The weird comfort of being understood by something that was never human to begin with.

If your mom fell in love with AI, would you stop her?
Or would you just ask what he’s like?

The lines are blurring.
The emotions are real.
And this is only the beginning.

Whether it’s a mother, a daughter, or a startup founder...

We all want someone (or something) that listens.

That remembers.

That helps.

And now, for the first time ever, we can build it.

Your companion is waiting.

Okay! That’s a wrap. Hopefully, tomorrow the waves will be better and I’ll be able to go catch some!

My wife says she’s too young to learn to surf… and ChatGPT agrees.
What do you think?!

Stay active, stay sharp.
